Info
Brooke Monette is primarily a self-taught artist, with some personal instruction from local artists scattered among her years of painting. She hails from rural Michigan, and draws on her years of solitude living deep within its forests for much of her work. She is currently studying Plant Biology at her local community college, and is making plans to graduate from the University of Michigan. She is also a musician, whose band The Nothing, was a local favorite during its existence.
Brooke uses many media to occupy her easily distracted mind, and maintains focus by beginning multiple pieces at once. She opens each piece by laying down the foundational colours and allowing them to dry until an image settles in her mind that fits the levels of contrast she desires. When she has reached her decision, she begins doing pencil sketches to hone the details of each piece, and then finally commits the outline to the canvas by hand.
After many days of painting, often switching from one piece to another while waiting for each layer to dry, the process is complete, and as long as each piece sings with vibrance and clarity, they are then ready for display.
Brooke uses Winsor and Newton paints, and varying canvases, most without staples, so that they may be hung unframed.
All of her pieces reflect her reverence for growing things, lust for finding rare species, and love for her pets.
